Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in seed trays with well-draining, fertile soil. Keep the soil warm (65°F - 75°F/18°C - 24°C) and moist until germination, which takes 7-14 days. After the last frost and when the soil temperature reaches around 50°F (10°C), transplant seedlings outdoors in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Space plants 4-6 inches apart to allow for proper bulb development. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy, and mulch to retain moisture. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. Thin out any weak seedlings to ensure strong, uniform bulbs. Harvest when the tops start to yellow and fall over, typically 90-110 days after transplanting. Cure onions in a warm, dry place before storage.
