Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil. Rhubarb prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Thin seedlings to 12-18 inches apart to allow space for growth. Fertilize with compost or a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy plant development. Rhubarb takes time to establish, so be patient—it may take 2-3 years before harvesting. Once mature, harvest the stalks in early spring, being careful not to remove too many to allow the plant to continue growing. Never harvest during the first year.
