Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors after the soil has warmed up. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil. Space seedlings 4-6 inches apart to allow room for the bulbs to grow. Onions prefer full sun and cool temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart to promote healthy bulb formation. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to support strong growth. Harvest when the bulbs are firm, mature, and the tops start to yellow, usually 100-120 days after sowing. Cure the onions in a dry, cool place before storing them.
