Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors once the soil has warmed. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil. Space them 4-6 inches apart in rows, as onions need room to form bulbs. Onions prefer full sun and cooler temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart to allow for bulb growth. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to encourage strong growth. Harvest when the bulbs are mature, typically 100-120 days after sowing, when the tops start to yellow and fall over. Cure the bulbs in a dry, cool place before storing.
