Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors after the last frost when the soil has warmed. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny spot. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during germination. Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart to allow space for bulb formation. Onions thrive in full sun and cooler temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C). Water regularly, especially in dry periods, and mulch to retain moisture. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost for strong growth. Harvest the onions when the bulbs are large, firm, and the tops begin to yellow, typically 100-120 days after sowing. Cure and store in a cool, dry place for best preservation.
