Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors once the soil is warm. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny location. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart to allow ample space for growth. Leeks prefer cooler temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C) and full sun. As the leeks grow, mound soil around the base to blanch the stems, producing tender white stalks. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and mulch to help retain moisture. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to encourage strong growth. Harvest when the leeks are mature and firm, typically 100-120 days after sowing.
