Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors once the soil is warm. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny spot. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart to allow space for the leeks to grow tall. Leeks prefer cool temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C) and full sun. As the leeks grow, mound soil around the base to blanch the stems and produce tender, white stalks. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost for strong growth. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and mulch to retain moisture. Harvest when the leeks are large, typically 100-120 days after sowing, when the stems are thick and the bulbs are well-formed.
