Clary sage
1. Sow Indoors:
- Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds on the surface of a moist seed-starting mix, as they need light to germinate. Do not cover the seeds.
- Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination usually takes 14–21 days.
2. Sow Outdoors:
- Directly sow seeds outdoors after the last frost in early spring. Scatter seeds over well-prepared soil and press them down lightly. Water gently and keep the soil moist until germination.
- Thin seedlings to about 12–18 inches apart once they have a few sets of leaves.
3. Sunlight and Care:
- Clary sage thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Water moderately, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Once established, the plant is somewhat drought-tolerant.
4. Harvesting:
- The plant typically blooms in late spring to early summer. The flowers can be cut for dried arrangements or used fresh for their aromatic properties.
Clary sage is valued for its medicinal uses and aromatic foliage, often included in herbal remedies or for making essential oils. Its large, beautiful spikes of lavender-pink or white flowers also attract pollinators, making it a great addition to any herb or flower garden.
