1. Sow Indoors or Outdoors:
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed trays or pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C). Germination takes 10–14 days.
- Outdoors: Directly sow seeds outdoors in early spring once the soil has warmed. Space seeds about 1 inch apart, and thin seedlings to about 6–8 inches apart once they have a few leaves.
2. Sunlight and Care: Chives prefer full sun or partial shade. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging. They are fairly drought-tolerant once established.
3. Harvesting: You can start harvesting chives once they are about 6–8 inches tall, typically 8–12 weeks after sowing. Snip leaves using scissors, and they will regrow for multiple harvests.
Bohemia chives are a cold-hardy variety known for their mild onion flavor, making them a great addition to salads, soups, and as a garnish.
