Plant seeds in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny to partly shaded location. Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch deep and space them 6-12 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy, and water regularly, especially in hot weather. Lettuce thrives in cooler temperatures, ideally between 55°F and 70°F (13°C - 21°C), so plant early in the spring or in late summer for fall harvest. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer to support steady growth, but avoid over-fertilizing as it can lead to bitterness. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and keep weeds down. Thin seedlings to prevent overcrowding, allowing for better air circulation. Harvest leaves when they’re tender and young, typically 30-50 days after planting.
