Plant seeds in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny spot, ideally 6-8 weeks before the last frost date for spring planting or in late summer for a fall harvest. Space the seeds 1/2 inch deep and about 1 inch apart. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, and water regularly during dry spells. Brussels sprouts prefer cooler temperatures, around 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C), and will need a long growing season (90-100 days). Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to encourage strong growth, and side-dress with nitrogen when plants are well-established. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Thin the seedlings to 12-18 inches apart once they’re large enough. Harvest the sprouts from the bottom of the stalk when they’re firm and green, typically after the first frost for the best flavor. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and caterpillars.
